Documentary Feature Award, Upcoming Screenings

Things continue to be at full speed for WONDER WOMEN! Next weekend the film will be screening at both the Mill Valley Film Festival and New Orleans Film Festival. We’re also a few days out from announcing a future November screening in New York City.

Additionally jurors at the Dallas Videofest honored WONDER WOMEN! on Sept. 30 with the Documentary Feature award. The festival celebrated its 25th anniversary, below is its fantastic opening credits:

WONDER WOMEN! also continues to receive great attention from the press. In August Sadie Magazine did a Q&A feature with Kristy about the film. San Francisco Magazine named it one of the best five documentaries at Mill Valley.

Dallas Morning News blogger Jaron Hataway said, “My hopes, and I’m sure the creators of this documentary feel a like sentiment, is that this film and others like it can put a more female empowering message out into the culture.”

The team is also preparing for the Producers Institute for New Media Technologies at the Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC) in San Francisco. We’re ecstatic to be moving forward with a gaming component to complement the film and will have a lot more to report after October.

U.S. Television Premiere On PBS’s “Independent Lens”

The news is out! WONDER WOMEN! will be having its U.S. television broadcast premiere on PBS’s prestigious “Independent Lens” series, in 2013. We expect for the film to be shown on public television stations across the country in March, 2013, to coincide with Women’s History Month.

We couldn’t be more excited to be sharing the screen with such a fantastic line-up of great documentaries. “Independent Lens” bills itself as “a film festival in your living room.” It is the preeminent venue for presenting independent documentaries on public television in the U.S. For the new season, it will be airing on Monday nights on PBS affiliate channels. We will have more information about scheduling as we get closer to the broadcast date. So stay tuned!

ITVS, the producer of “Independent Lens,” has also selected WONDER WOMEN! to become part of the Women and Girls Lead film catalog. Combining independent documentary film, television, new media, and global outreach partnerships, Women and Girls Lead amplifies the voices of women and girls acting as leaders, expands understanding of gender equity, and engages an international network of citizens and organizations to act locally and reach out globally.

The entire team is ecstatic that we were able to reach 100% of our KICKSTARTER campaign goal for the film in under three weeks. We owe it ALL to our supporters. This week we are sound mixing the film and locking the picture in preparation for our World Premiere at South by Southwest.

If you haven’t had a chance to view our most recent trailer and visit the KICKSTARTER page, it’s not too late to check it out and get involved.

Any additional money we raise during the remaining days of the campaign will be directly applied to promoting the film during the festival circuit, publicity materials, building out our website with outtakes and insightful scenes that didn’t quite make the final cut, and supporting our community screenings and eventual broadcast. We want to bring this documentary to countless cities and start a dialogue about the involvement of women in comics and action-based media.

There are a number of awesome comic-themed rewards and they are only available during the campaign. Don’t miss out!

Also, the net has been buzzing about the film with mentions on Ain’t it Cool News, Examiner.com, Filmology, and many other blogs. Kristy also did a Q&A interview with ScienceFiction.com, you can read it here.

We’ve been busy since SXSW announced the film will premiere at this year’s festival. We want to thank everyone who has promoted it via email, Facebook, Twitter, blogs or simply word of mouth. Words cannot express how awesome it is to see the online support.

Here’s some of the great coverage we’ve received so far:

  • Bill Leff visited with Kristy on his radio show, which aired on WGN (720 AM) in Chicago.
  • The staff over at Huff Post Arts posted a Q&A with Kristy and Kelcey about the film.
  • Whitney Matheson over at USA Today’s Pop Candy gave us a shout out, as did Jill Pantozzi at The Mary Sue and The Beat:The News Blog of Comics Culture. The Linster also wrote a great post on AfterEllen.

And a HUGE thanks to everyone who has participated in the Kickstarter campaign. You are essential to the film’s success and our heroes. Keep spreading the word to ensure we’ll reach our goal! Thanks again.
  • Wonder Woman Pilot Rejected by NBC

As you may or may not know the new Wonder Woman pilot episode was not picked up by NBC, reason being, the outfit did not match the original Wonder Woman.

The argument that was made was that “She is meant to be an inspiring feminist icon, but she represents a vast array of things that feminism despises. By which I mean, she dresses like a stripper.” However, an article from “DC Women Kicking Ass” entitled, “It’s not the costume, stupid” argues that the costume argument is just an excuse for the real reason they are rejecting it.

When asked why there was no Wonder Woman movie Darren Franich from Entertainment Weekly said, “It’s just much easier to sell a male action film to studios than a female one.”

When the only audience they think of is men, that may be true, but “Women want to see characters that are strong and smart and capable. They don’t want to see characters that are cliches or bastardizations or characters that are seen through the lens of male writers and creators who don’t write authentic women but as archetypes and a mindfield of sexist tropes.”

They say it is hard to sell a female hero, but when is the last time they tried?
